Vintage Peak District map

the artwork

Larger maps are typically my original artwork. Rich in detail and painstakingly put together. Most of the smaller maps are derived from these. Either districts of a county map, or regions from a country map.

The principle aims were to design maps based on antique cartographic styles, but enhanced with contemporary design choices to create a map that is both beautiful, incredibly detailed, accurate and informative.

Where the style diverges most from antique cartographic styles, is in the use of white space around the map. Many maps are very crowded. Here I wanted to give room for the map to breath and take centre stage.

The level of detail is quite dense but layered, so you can enjoy the map from across the room while appreciating its aesthetic and study the details and depth close up.

paper & printing

a 270 gsm weight, off-white ivory, matte fine art archival paper is used

the latest inkjet printing technology is used. A HP z9 ink jet printer, one of HP's latest and greatest printers. this is a 9-ink system with this type of printing often referred to as 'giclee' printing

this offers greater protection of the artworks longevity with 100-200 years quoted to guarantee its integrity against fading colour

Derbyshire vintage map

canvas

an alternative to paper is printing on white cotton polyester canvas

when framed there is no glazing between you and the artwork allowing the colours to really sing. without glazing and the glare this creates, you can see the artwork clearly from any angle around the room.

the canvas is stretched around a separate frame before being set inside a display frame.

you can purchase a 'print only' on canvas or a 'stretched canvas' which will be ready to hang without the display frame or also have a display frmae made to set the stretched canvas in.

Canvas is only available for larger print sizes B2, A1 & B1.

frame build

if you order a framed print, your artwork will arrive ready to hang

each print and frame is made to order with the frame moulding measured, cut, pinned together, essential all built from scratch

your print with your frame will be 'dry mounted' which is the process whereby a print is bonded to am adhesive board. This prevents the artwork moving or the paper being deformed by changes in temperature & moisture, ensuring its integrity for a lifetime.

the frame is completely sealed at the back with bumpers and string ties added. Larger heaver frames have L-shaped brackerts in the top corners for proper wall mounting.

glazing

using glass is simply not an option when delivering larger artwork.

For small frames (A3, 40x50cm & A2) real glass is used

For large frames (B2, A1 & B1) a 3mm thick high grade extruded acrylic or plexiglass is used.

it is lighter than glass making shipping more affordable and the artwork more convenient to hang

50% greater transparency than glass with obvious benefits to viewing the artwork

The main limitation is it scratches much easier than glass. For cleaning use a microfiber cloth.
